Hoshin Planning and Goal Directed Project Management

Qualica for Hoshin is a fully integrated planning environment for enterprise and project planning. Leveraging the power of Hoshin Kanri and elements of Goal Directed Project Management (GDPM) Qualica for Hoshin effectively supports project leaders in meeting project timelines and mitigating project risks. Hierarchical cascading of enterprise to site and department objectives is fully synchronized – changes and new goals are cascaded down and status is flown up in hierarchy upon a mouse click.

Policy Deployment

Hoshin Kanri (Policy Deployment) is a planning system helping organizations to break down strategic, top-level objectives to detailed action. The Japanese term hoshin means shining metal, compass, or pointing the direction, kanri means management or control.
In Hoshin Kanri enterprise level objectives are updated annually by top management. These goals are translated into strategic projects with measurable objectives. Strategic projects are cascaded (or deployed) through levels of management and translated into objectives and specific projects in business units, sites and departments.
Developed by Prof. Yoji Akao and applied by organizations like Toyota or Hewlett-Packard, Hoshin Kanri is a strategic planning methodology based on a Shewhart Plan-Do-Check-Act philosophy to create goals, define measurable milestones, and link daily, weekly and monthly control activities to corporate strategy.

Hoshin Kanri will ensure corporate objectives are communicated  to everyone in the organization. It will trigger specific actions and implement the necessary controls to ensure everybody is delivering key results required for success. Japanese Deming Prize winners credit Hoshin as a key contributor to business success. Many Western companies, including many Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winners, have also started to apply Hoshin Kanri.

Classical application of Hoshin is a paper based process where most of the information is summarized on A3-size posters placed on planning boards of departments.  This visual approach to management is considered a major factor for success of Hoshin. The paper based approach does not always scale well to the needs of global and distributed organizations.


Extended Planning

Qualica for Hoshin integrates A3 forms in a repository of linked projects. Forms and projects can be reviewed online, printed and posted or published on the intranet. Actions can be exported to and synchronized with MS Project.

Full Integration

With Qualica for Hoshin you can leverage the power of integration with the full DFSS toolkit. Use AHP for prioritization, DSM for project sequencing, or scorecards for performance tracking and apply Hoshin Planning and GDPM to Systems Engineering.
